Christine Green

I have a life long love of fabrics and stitched my first patchwork quilt when I was about eight, for my teddy bear. I then went on to make a matching one for me, raiding my mum’s off cuts and collecting extra bits from friends and neighbours. And that was it, I was hooked!

I stitch by hand and machine, for fun and occasionally to order, in between designing, teaching, paper cutting and family. I find playing with fabrics so therapeutic and exciting. I take inspiration from the quilts of Gees Bend; their recycling ethic born of necessity, and their wonderful improvised designs are so liberating. The spirit behind their work is what I draw on and I rarely buy new fabric. I much prefer car booting or charity shop bargains, and I am always happy to take on donated stashes when someone is having a clearout.

I regularly run courses teaching different techniques, encouraging students to get creative and not to worry too much about perfectly mitred corners and aligned pieces. And have some FUN!

I have a talk, “Bust the Rules and get Creative”, which explains my take on patchwork
and includes lots of resources and inspirational ideas.
Some recent feed back ‘We all thoroughly enjoyed your lively talk very much.  Everyone I’ve spoken to has said how much they loved it.  I think a few consciences have been pricked with regards to re-using and re-cycling, rather than buying yet more jelly rolls and co-ordinated packs of fabric!’
